Pitching the media can be many things. It’s fun. It can get your creative juices flowing. It can also be really frustrating! Now add a global pandemic on top of it and just like everything else in our lives right now, a media pitch has taken on a “new normal” mentality.
We’re fortunate at Pace PR to represent many seasoned leaders in the medical industry who have been giving interviews on the coronavirus, in an effort to inform the public and also to debunk any false claims being reported.
One of our clients, Dr. Dyan Hes, is a NYC-based pediatrician. She’s been very vocal on the dangers of the coronavirus for far-longer than many and she’s a front-line worker. We’re so proud to represent her!
We recently secured this interview with CBSN, the streaming arm of CBS News. As you can see, she gave the dire warning to viewers that she believed 80% of New York City’s children were likely infected and thus carriers of the virus. The interview went viral. The next day it was the cover the New York Post and it was featured in countless others, such as The Daily Mail and Cheddar TV.
As a publicist, this is the icing on the cake – when a secured interview results in organic pickup, i.e. other outlets reporting on the news of the interview.
But the cherry on top of the cake is when a late-night talk show picks up this news. It’s happened a few times, like when our client Lauren Leader’s Morning Joe interview got picked up by Trevor Noah. And it happened with Dr. Hes, too, when a friend texted her that she has just seen a clip of her interview being replayed by John Oliver!
There’s no “secret sauce” to making this happen. What made this one interview have so much longtail media is that Dr. Hes gave a very informed, direct interview with important information that no one else had been reporting on. So in addition to having this important news spread to multiple news outlets, our client benefitted by increased exposure, thus continuing to add to her credibility and overall brand awareness.
